Chelonian Research Monographs – Number 5
CHELONIAN RESEARCH MONOGRAPHS
The fifth offering in this series, appearing in gradual fashion in online and hardcopy versions since 2008, is the following major work, produced under the auspices of the IUCN/SSC Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group (TFTSG). Publication of individual species accounts began online on the TFTSG website in May 2008, followed by annual hardcopy publications thereafter. The first hardcopy installment was published December 2008 and installments have appeared annually since then. The work is modeled on the format established by the Catalogue of American Amphibians and Reptiles (CAAR), with a high-quality color binder and looseleaf accounts. The entire work will consist of thousands of pages of text, eventually covering all 300+ species of freshwater turtles and tortoises of the world.
Each species account is standardized to include color photos of the species, a color distribution map, and sections on Taxonomy, Distribution, Habitat and Ecology, Population Status, Threats to Survival, Conservation Measures Taken, Conservation Measures Proposed, Captive Husbandry, Current Research, and Literature Cited.
The project also includes an annual detailed and annotated checklist of all Turtles of the World, authored by the Turtle Taxonomy Working Group of the TFTSG.
Since initiating publication of the CBFTT project in 2008, and as of January 2014, we have published a total of 72 accounts covering 92 recognized turtle and tortoise taxa from 105 nations, plus 5 taxonomic checklists, with contributions by 130 authors and 130 photographers, for 874 total pages of text.
Check out and download the online open-access low-resolution published species accounts and checklists as they are gradually published on the TFTSG website.
To obtain high-resolution hardcopy printed versions of the annually-produced accounts, order copies by using the downloadable order form below.
Due to the rapidly and hugely escalating production and postage costs of this massive publication project, we are forced at this time (January 2014) to change our original sales offer. The original purchase price paid over the last few years will now cover only the 70 species accounts and 5 checklists published in Installments 1 through 6 from 2008 through 2013 (and that price is still available to purchase all those Installments); however, future annual Installments 7 and up from 2014 and on will need to be priced and sold individually and will be advertised annually when they have been produced. We truly regret any inconvenience caused by this economically necessary policy change.
